What Is Reiki?

Updated: Nov 23, 2020

What is Reiki?

Reiki originated in Japan and dates back to the teachings of lifelong spiritual monk, Mikao Usui in the early 1920’s. The word Reiki can be broken into two Japenses words, ‘Rei’ meaning ‘Universal Life’ and ‘Ki’ which means ‘Energy’. Reiki is an energy healing treatment. It works holistically with your body, mind and spirit together. It is not a religious system or belief.

Reiki channels that life force energy, also known as chi or prana, moves it through you and works to clear energetic blocks, restoring balance and promoting our own ability to heal on all levels. There is an unseen “life force energy” that flows through us. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

Reiki can often help you to process, release or transmute energy on mental, emotional and physical levels. Reiki treats the whole person including the body, emotions, mind and spirit.

Why do people use Reiki?

Many people use Reiki for wellness. It should not be used as a cure all for disease or illness, but rather assists in creating an environment that can facilitate healing. Many hospitals and medical care facilities are using Reiki to compliment traditional medical practices.

Reasons one might use Reiki include:

Stress relief & relaxation

Pain reduction

Release of emotional blockages

Balance energy

Speed up natural healing process

Compliment other energy healing or traditional medical practices

Reiki is growing.

Especially in the west, there has previously been a debate as to the effectiveness of Reiki and other energy healing modalities. Today, energy healing is gaining momentum and science is beginning to back it up. In fact hospitals across America are beginning to offer Reiki as a standard medical treatment. Research by hospitals and universities are also popping up. Click here if a list of ‘Medical Research and Other Papers on Reiki'. As Reiki gains in popularity you can expect more research to surface as well as personal accounts of healing.

What happens during a Reiki session?

Reiki session typically can be found in 30, 60 or 90 minute sessions. Your practitioner will usually explain the process and as the client you can address any particular problems you might be experiencing. For in person reiki session, the client will rest on a massage table or for those with physical limitation in a chair. It is recommended to wear loose clothing and remove shoes during session. A session can be either hands-on with light touch or hands-off where they hold their hands a few inches from the body. The practitioner will then proceed to move through standard Reiki hand positions beginning at the head. Like other energy healing, you may feel tingling or hot to cold sensations, emotional release, or change in energy level or change in appetite. The intensity of this experience is different for everyone.

Distance Reiki Healing is another option, especially for those who have limited mobility or perhaps are a little shy. We are more than just our physical bodies, we are energy and as such Reiki energy connects on our spiritual and energetic levels. Reiki is not limited by distance because distance is a physical limitation, not an energetic one, so sessions can be done without clients needing to be physically present.

You do not need to do anything during a distance healing session. If you wish you may at the appointed time, relax and focus on your body and energy. Just like in person Reiki, you may feel tingling or hot to cold sensations, or emotional release. Again, personal experience and intensity are subjective.
